What is Audiomaton?

Audiomaton is a multi-purpose shareware application program which automates many common digital audio processing tasks. For example, it enables you to quickly and easily amplify the volume of thousands of AIFF files, to convert any number of MP3s or MP4s to Windoze .wav files, or to extract all the 'snd' resources from the resource forks of all the files and applications you drop on Audiomaton's icon.

Audiomaton works as a companion to the popular Macintosh audio editing application program SndSampler. Audiomaton determines which files are to be processed and what is to be done with them. Then it sends this information to SndSampler, which does most of the actual processing. Please note that in order to take full advantage of Audiomaton, you will need to purchase licenses both for Audiomaton and SndSampler.

How Do I Use Audiomaton?

Audiomaton builds a "file list" when you drop files, folders, or disks onto the application's icon. After you've created a file list, you can view it to see which files are actually in there. When you're satisfied with your file list, choose what operations you'd like to perform on your files, click the Go button, and you're off and running. Audiomaton will send the files in your file list one at a time to SndSampler for processing until they have all been taken care of. If you want, you can sit and watch the files as they are sent to SndSampler and processed automatically. You don't have to write any AppleScripts. You don't even have to know what AppleScript is!

Do I Have to Babysit Audiomaton?

No! While Audiomaton is processing your files you can go get a cup of coffee, catch up on your reading, or teach the dog to smoke. Once started Audiomaton requires no additional user input. If something goes wrong during the run, Audiomaton writes a short description of the problem in a special "Error Log" file. When processing has completed, Audiomaton will inform you if there have been any errors. Then you can take a look at the Error Log and see what went wrong.

What Kinds of Things Can Audiomaton Do?

Audiomaton can process your audio files in many different ways. Its various functions are separated into four groups, as represented in the application as tabs. Shown below is the Modify tab. With the Modify tab you can modify AIFF, System 7 Sound, Sound Clipping, Sun .au, Windoze .wav, Raw Audio, and other types of files by:

Modify Tab

That's not all Audiomaton allows you to do. You can also convert your audio files into files of a different format. Shown below is the Convert tab. On the left are a series of checkboxes which represent the types of files you want to convert. Files in your file list which are not of a checked type will be skipped. Here the user has opted to convert only AIFF, MP3, MP4, Windoze WAVE, and MIDI files.

You can also use Audiomaton to split large files into smaller files, or merge small files into one large file. Shown below is the Merge tab.

In addition, Audiomaton allows you to take control of those old collections of System 7 sounds and sound resource files that you have lying around. (System 7 sounds are the files you used to be able to double-click in the Finder to play.) Audiomaton can extract all the sound resources from any file or application. This is done with the Extract tab. Audiomaton can also copy sound resources from all the files in the file list and drop them into a single file, in case you want to create a new sound resource file. This is done with the Insert/Replace tab, as shown below.
